Justified Season 3

I finished the third season of Justified a few days ago and I am already half-way through season four. From the start Justified has been great, with its interesting characters and surprising flourishes of violence. In my opinion the third season was the best so far, but a lot of that is due to the foundation that was built through the first two. Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder are two of the best characters on television today.

Justified has managed to make each season feel new, yet very familiar by keeping the cast of regulars. I’m worried at some point they are going to run out of ways for the same bad guys to be interesting, but they have been able to pull it off so far. In season three there were a lot of characters with a lot of shenanigans going on and it was hard to keep track of sometimes. There were moments in S3 when I felt like the show would benefit by simplifying.

The most notable bad guy from S3 was newcomer Robert Quarrels. Now he was an interesting guy. A first he seemed evil, but in a calm and organized kind of way. Then he got crazy. And by the end he had totally spun out of control and it was almost sad. Looking back on the season he didn’t succeed at anything he was trying to accomplish… but he was a really good antagonist from beginning to end.

We find out Quarrels is tied to a criminal overlord in Detroit. It is amazing how much stuff is going down in Harlan County Kentucky. First it was Miami and now Detroit. It is crazy how one little patch of the Kentucky backwoods can harbor so much crime. I guess it is a good thing Raylan is there.

Season three of Justified was fun to watch. I already know season four is just as good. I’ve been able to sit down and marathon this show even more then LOST or Breaking Bad[1]. It is right up there with the best tv I’ve seen[2]. I can’t wait to see what goes down in season four and then get started on season five. I am glad I’m watching it after-the-fact. I can’t imagine waiting a whole week between episodes.

  1. In retrospect LOST as a whole was not good, but those first 3 seasons were great.  ↩
  2. I haven’t seen The Wire, or Sapranos, or Game Of Thrones, or even True Detective.  ↩
