They Are Still Making Those Car Movies

This week my wife and daughter are gone. I am living the bachelor life. I had plans to watch a ton of movies this week. I have a huge backlog of films to get through and I was going to knock out at least a couple a day. That hasn't happened. Not even close. I've definitely watched more films than normal, but nowhere near what I planned.

I started my week off with Fast Five. I watched The Fast And The Furious in the theater in high school and I haven't seen any of the films since. I was content to skip Fast Five as well, but there was so much critical praise when it came out there was no way I could do that. I don't care that much about Vinn Diesel or Paul Walker, but I'm a fan of Dwayne Johnson... and he was the best part of the movie by far.

Overall it is a fun movie with a few impressive action set pieces. The dialog is horrible as expected. The emotional scenes feel hollow. The attempts and comedy cause more cringes than laughter. Paul Walker delivers every line like he is half asleep. But a good car movie cannot be written off.

The Rock knows what kind of movie he is in and he plays it for full effect. He is pretty amazing. He is also totally jacked. I thought The Rock was big before, but in this movie he is huge. He also is sweating like a beast in every scene. I just kept thinking, "Somebody get this guy a Gatorade or he isn't going to make it." I imagine they had an intern with a back-pack sprayer full of baby oil douse him before every scene. The truck he drove in the movie was awesome. I don't know what it was, but I want one.

The ending was pretty stupid. I was hoping for something more. The last chase sequence threw the laws of physics out the window. It was cheesy. It was dorky. The jokes were bad. It was still fun to watch.
